Rescue AmStaff practicing distraction training in Roanoke VA

Dog: 65-pound rescue AmStaff
Owner: Amy
Trainer: Cristen
Location: Roanoke, VA
Program: Dog Training Program
Main Focus: Reactivity, leash pulling, impulse control, and responsiveness around distractions
Outcome: Improved control, stronger responsiveness, and greater freedom during outdoor activities

The Challenge

Before training, Amy’s rescue dog struggled with several behaviors that made everyday walks difficult. He was reactive, pulled hard on the leash, and had a strong desire to chase squirrels, rabbits, and other small animals. Because he weighed about 65 pounds, controlling him during these moments could be challenging.

Amy was dealing with:

  • Strong leash pulling
  • Reactivity during walks
  • Chasing squirrels and other animals
  • Difficulty maintaining control around distractions
  • Limited freedom in outdoor environments

Walks in areas with wildlife could quickly become stressful.

The Training Approach

Amy worked with trainer Cristen to improve her dog’s responsiveness and control around real-world distractions. The training helped establish clearer expectations and gave Amy a way to communicate with her dog when tempting distractions appeared.

Training focused on:

  • Improving responsiveness to commands
  • Building better control during walks
  • Teaching impulse control around squirrels and other distractions
  • Reducing excessive pulling
  • Helping Amy manage her dog more confidently outdoors

Amy noted that they even missed two classes, although she would not recommend doing so, and still found the training highly effective.

The Results

Two years after completing training, Amy shared that the results were still making a difference. Her dog can now enjoy time off leash in the woods while remaining responsive when squirrels appear. Although he may still want to chase them, Amy can tell him to stay and expect him to listen.

What Improved

  • Walks became easier to manage
  • Leash pulling improved
  • Responsiveness around wildlife became stronger
  • Amy gained better control in distracting environments
  • Her dog gained more freedom during outdoor activities
  • Training continued to provide value two years later

For Amy, the biggest change was being able to enjoy outdoor adventures with a dog who could respond even when exciting distractions were nearby.

Trainer Insight

Dogs with strong prey drive, reactivity, or leash-pulling habits may find outdoor environments especially challenging. Structured obedience and consistent owner follow-through can give dogs clearer expectations around distractions. The goal is not to remove every instinct or temptation, but to build reliable communication so owners can better manage real-life situations.

Ready for Better Control Around Distractions?

If walks become difficult because your dog pulls, reacts, or struggles to listen around wildlife and other distractions, structured training may help improve communication and everyday control.
